First Across the Continent The story of the exploring expedition of Lewis and Clark in 180456 eBook Noah Brooks

I am fascinated by the journey of Lewis and Clark and read or watch all that I can. First Across the Continent is an excellent narrative of the expedition and includes numerous quotes from the explorers journals, without getting bogged down in details that are not relevant to the telling of the story. This book was written by Noah Brooks in 1901 and his perspective from the beginning of the 20th century does not include the current political correctness which "colors" or explains the actions and ethics of our ancestors who were involved in nation building.

First Across the Continent The story of the exploring expedition of Lewis and Clark in 180456 eBook Noah Brooks Reviews

An old, but well written, account of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The book quotes extensively from the Journals. The absence of maps is a hinderance.
Ok
I had to slug through the book but in the end it was worth the effort. I only wish maps of the corresponding areas of travel had been put into the book. Would have made it much more meaningful. Lots of repetitious descriptions but still full of information. Hard to believe they survived the journey.
This is a step by step account of the Lewis & Clark expedition of 1804, 1805 and 1806. Join them as they meet the different tribes of Indians and wildlife in this new found land. This book describes their day by day struggles as they make their way up the Missouri, over the mountains and on to the Pacific.
It was an interesting read because of the quotations from the journals. You could feel as you were there in the woods batting the mosquitoes back as they were. It was also interesting to feel where you were at as you followed the expedition through the western portion of the country and helpful when the editor placed notes as to the future name of the rivers or cities in those areas. I would recommend anyone to read the book for the historical accuracy. Today so many books are revisionist and it was refreshing to read something based on accurate history.
This is one book that you won't want to put down if you have an interest in the history of the United States of America or even if you are just looking for something good to read.
The accounts are vivid. You can almost experience first hand the exciting adventure. You almost feel as if you were with them on this amazing expedition. The details are fascinating. Their encounters with the bears are so well written that you will want to join in with them in seeking a safe place to escape for fear of your life.
It is a free download. What more could you ask for? I highly recommend it.

Grabbed me from the first few pages. The writer relies heavily on Lewis and Clark's journals, using their own words to convey their experiences. This brought me closer to the story, experiencing what they saw and felt first hand. Sacagawea does not get a lot of ink in this book, but that is ok. The author covers the trip well and wraps it up with brief but informative notes on where Lewis, Clark and even Sacagawea's son end up.

Very good read. I highly recommend it!
